Matta Rice Porridge Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 5 mins | Cooking Time : 30 mins | Soaking Time : 1 hr
Makes : 1 Cup | Suits: 7+ Months babies

Kerala Matta Rice – 1 tbsp
Water – 1 cup

Preparation – How to make Matta Rice Porridge for babies ?

1.Take a tbsp of Kerala Matta rice/Red Rice and wash well.2.Soak for 1 hour. Transfer rice to a pressure cooker. Add a cup of water to it.3. Pressure cook for 2 whistles in high heat(#8 in stove knob) and 25 mins in medium heat(#4 in stove knob).4.Though the rice looks in shape, if you take one and press between your fingers, it would turn mushy, if cooked thoroughly.5.Cool down completely and grind in mixie along with cooked water in it. Add a drop of melted ghee and feed.

Tips/Tricks in making Kerala Matta Rice Porridge for babies

  • You shall add breast milk or formula to thin down and for added flavor.
  • Do not waste the cooked water as it has more minerals in it.
  • Minimum one hour soaking is required. You shall soak for more time too. Overnight soaking can also be done.
  • Hand blender can be used for 10+ months babies.

Godhumai kanji for babies recipe-1Though there are many varieties of ready-made baby foods available in the market, none can compete the satisfaction factor rendered by home-made ones. One such fresh and healthy porridge is Godumai paal kanji..

Wheat Milk porridge is a wise choice in introducing wheat to your baby. Try this light-version for a month before trying whole wheat foods. Always start with small portions and check if it suits your baby. Watch for wheat allergies in babies and immediately report to doctor, if you see any.

Do introduce Finger Millet(Ragi) Milk Porridge before introducing this.

Wheat Milk Porridge Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 10 mins | Cooking Time : 5 mins | Waiting Time : 8 hrs
Makes : 1 Cup | Suits: 8+ Months babies

Samba Whole Wheat – 1/4 cup
Water – 1/2 cup
Ghee – 1/8 tsp

Preparation

1.Wash wheat kernels twice or thrice in water and soak it overnight.Wheat Porridge for babies recipe step-12.In the morning, it bulges and becomes soft. Tips/Tricks

  • Though Punjabi wheat can be used, I recommend Sambha wheat as it is more nutritious.
  • This porridge thickens quickly. So, feed immediately.
  • Do not add sweet or salt in food for baby below 1 year.
  • I use sieve(Milk/Tea filter) to filter wheat milk when I prepared for my baby. For this shoot, I used a muslin cloth as I have packed my sieves for US trip. After the shoot, I realized that wheat milk should not be squeezed using cotton cloth as it sticks heavily and doesn’t leave the fabric even after rigorous washes! So, please use normal filter and press with a spoon to extract the milk. If using cloth, do not squeeze much.

Javvarisi Kanji Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 15 mins | Cooking Time : 8 mins | Waiting Time : 40 mins
Makes : 1/2 Cup powder | Suits: 7+ Months babies

For Sago Porridge powder

Sago/Javvarisi  – 1/4 cup
Whole Urad dal/Muzhu Uzhundhu – 1/4 cup

For Sago Porridge

Sago Porridge powder – 1 tbsp
Water – 1/2 cup

Preparation

Tips/Tricks

  • The shelf life of this porridge powder is 3 months in room temperature and 4 months if refrigerated.
  • I have used nylon variety sago and that is preferred for this porridge.
  • When drying sago and urad dal, dry them in a cotton cloth for faster drying.
  • Do fry sago and urad dal individually as mentioned in the post.
  • Always mix mother’s milk in baby’s food atleast till 1 year as it will be easy for the baby to get accustomed to new food. Also, your milk supply will be maintained as you squeeze it out more.
  • As I have repeatedly mentioned, I don’t prefer adding salt for babies below 1 year.

Any lottery luck might make one wealthy. But, health has no role for luck! One have to work continuously to posses it and still more progressively to sustain it. When it comes to babies, the responsibility relies on the parents. Build their health and gift them a healthy future!

I have already posted on how to make homemade Multigrain powder/Sathu Maavu for 1-2 years babies and with little addition of ingredients for 2+ years kids and adults. Please avoid store-bought powders and make your own batch for your kid. Once the powder is ready, you will have hustle-free mornings with this quick & healthy breakfast.Multigrains Porridge 2

Sathu Maavu Koozh Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 2 mins | Cooking Time : 6 mins
Makes : 1/2 Cup | Suits: 1+ Years babies and whole family

Multigrain powder/Sathu Maavu – 1 tbsp
Milk – 1/2 cup
Ghee – 1/4 tsp

Preparation

1. Mix multigrain powder with warm(not hot) milk. Mix thoroughly so that there are no lumps.How to make sathu Maavu koozh-1 2. Cook in medium flame for 1/2 minute and then simmer. Keep stirring for 5 mins until desired consistency reaches. Add ghee and stir for 1/2 minute. Switch off the stove and transfer to a clean bowl, immediately.How to make sathu Maavu koozh-2      Add a topping of Mother’s milk.. Feed warm and fresh! 

Multigrains Porridge 3

Tips/Tricks

  • Mother’s milk should not be cooked. So, just add it as an additional healthy and tasty topping. Use boiled cow’s milk to make this porridge. Do not add water while boiling milk.
  • Once prepared, transfer to the feeding bowl asap as it dries faster in the hot pan!
  • This porridge thickens over time. It tastes good when its still warm and fresh. So, just make few minutes before you wish to feed.
  • This porridge is best suited for breakfast. You can also feed in brunch time or evening. Not advisable for dinner as it takes time to digest.
  • I have practised Nilaa to this taste. If you need, you shall add filtered jaggery syrup to it after adding milk.
  • Give this porridge at least 3 days a week. Avoid continuous days so that it is not seen as a boring breakfast 😉
  • Do give this Multigrain powder at least till the age of eight. For girl babies, who demand more calcium, continue this healthy mix for the whole life. It can take various forms like porridge, laddoo, dosa, chapathi,…Multigrains Porridge 4

Finger Millet Milk Porridge

Finger Millet Milk Porridge 1Traditionally, Ragi is the first millet to be introduced to babies. To aid the developing digestive system, the nutrients are extracted from Ragi in the form of milk and the outer coverings are discarded.

Please do not use store bought powders for babies. Prepare this Finger Millet Milk Porridge(Ragi paal kanji) freshly before every feed. This takes less time, less effort but bestows more energy and more nutrients to your baby.

Ragi is considered as heat generating food, and so ghee is added for the cooling effect. Due to its rich iron content, Ragi might cause constipation and some ways to avoid it are:

  • Cook well as raw ragi might constipate
  • Add ghee as it acts as a Laxative
  • Give more water especially warm water after 10 mins of the feed
  • Include Banana in the diet for the day when you feed Ragi.

Finger Millet Milk Porridge 2If you exclusively breastfeed for first 6 months, introduce this porridge at the seventh month. Even if you have started weaning from 4th month, this healthy porridge should be your right choice! Whichever month you introduce, be sure to introduce banana for few days before starting this porridge. Once accustomed to Ragi Milk porridge, from 8th month, whole Ragi porridge can be started.

Ragi paal kanji Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 5 mins | Cooking Time : 5 mins | Waiting Time : 2-8 hrs hrs
Makes : 1/2 Cup | Suits: 4-8 Months babies

Finger Millet – 1/4 cup
Ghee – 1/4 tsp
Water – 1 cup

Preparation

1.  Soak Ragi in water overnight. You can just soak for 1-2 hours too but overnight soaking is preferable as it softens the millet and yields thick milk.How to make Ragi for babies step12.  Just 15 minutes before feeding, wash the soaked millets twice in water. Drain the water and transfer Ragi to Mixie jar.How to make Ragi for babies step23.  Grind it for few pulses and add water. Grind for few more pulses until the milk is extracted well.How to make Ragi for babies step34.  Place a thin cotton cloth on the mouth of a container. Pour the ground stuff over the cloth. Rinse the jar with some more water and pour it over the cloth.How to make Ragi for babies step45.  Hold all the corners of the cloth and squeeze out the Ragi milk. Transfer the extracted Ragi milk to a tawa. Add 1/4tsp ghee.How to make Ragi for babies step56.  Heat the tawa in sim flame and keep stirring. In few minutes, the milk thickens. Tips/Tricks

  • Once prepared, feed this within an hour. It is always good to feed fresh food to babies.
  • As it thickens quickly, from the start, cook in sim flame, giving some more time for it to cook well.
  • Do not tend to add ghee at the end. Let the ghee cook with the milk.
  • When you are in hurry, you can even soak for half an hour and extract the milk. In such case, add some more Ragi.
  • This is best for breakfast. Any time before evening is preferable. Do not feed this for dinner.
  • As I have repeatedly mentioned, I don’t prefer adding salt/sugar for babies below 1 year. I am sure your baby will enjoy this food without any more additions.
  • Warning! Mother’s milk is sufficient for babies till 6 months. Think twice and discuss with your Paed before starting other food!

Oats fig porridge

“Out in my garden one fine day,
With my cam , I went to click ..
I clicked it left, I clicked it right,
I clicked it well , one fine day ! ”
“Out in my garden ..” is my kid’s favourite rhyme and Oats is Nilaa’s favourite meal 🙂

This is my first ever ‘food clicking’ experience .. I moved the table in and out looking for apt angle and lighting and just clicked as many snaps as possible .. Any guess when I stopped clicking ?? I could hear that when I got a perfect snap .. Naw, thats not correct !! But, when that beautiful blue bowl broke to pieces when I was moving the table for the next click 😉 Shhhh! Let’s slyly move to the recipe 🙂

Oats Fig Porridge Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 5 mins | Cooking Time : 5 mins | Makes : 1 bowl
Suits: 1+ year babies and whole family

Oats – 1/3 cup for adults , 1/4 cup for babies
Milk – 1 cup
Dried Fig – 1

Preparation

1.  Clean mixie jar with a dry cloth so that there is no moisture. Grind Oats flakes to powder.

2.  Cut out the centre of dried fig as they contain more seeds and hope you don’t wish to see more seeds in your baby’s stool next day 😉 This step could be skipped if prepared only for adults.How to make Oats Fig Porridge Step 13.  Blend the fig well in mixie. In a pan, add oats, fig and milk.How to make Oats Fig Porridge Step 24.  Mix it well with a large spoon/ladle. If you find some accumulated figs, smash it amidst the spoon and the pan walls so that no lumps remain.

5.  Switch on the stove in high flame for half a minute and then simmer. Keep stirring for 5 mins or until your desired consistency.How to make Oats Fig Porridge Step 3If you feel it is too thick for the baby, mix some milk(mother’s milk/boiled cow’s milk) and serve immediately.

Tips/Tricks

  • Once cooked, transfer to a bowl immediately, else it would be thickened more.
  • You can soak fig in warm water for 10 mins for a smooth grinding. I usually make this as unplanned breakfast and so won’t have the time to soak 😉
  • I always eat after feeding Nilaa. As it will thicken over time, I add some boiled milk(need not essentially be hot while adding), mix well and have it with fruits and nuts topping.
  • For babies, first start from 1/4 of a fig and then gradually increase to 1/3, 1/2 and then 1.
  • Clean the mixie jar well after use. Refer “How to clean mixie jar?”
