Mudakkathan keerai dosai-1Mudakku means “Pain” and Aruthaan means “One who alleviates/relieves”. To make it simple, Mudakkaruthaan is a natural Pain-killer. This doesn’t mean that this is tagged as a medicine to be taken only during illness. This herb keep us active and healthy!

I consumed this during my pregnancy when I had severe leg cramps in the last trimester. I started giving it to my kid when she turned 1. We have 3 plants of balloon vine in our backyard(1 creeper pic below). This is now available in Farmer’s market(Uzhavar Sandhai) and any greens-seller could get you this on demand.MudakkaruthaanThis medicinal herb also treats cough, fever, headache, piles, constipation, diarrhoea, dysentery, menstrual disorder and mainly joint pains. You could not feel the bitter taste when mixed with dosa batter. This dosa will be crispy and delicious. Goes well with any chutney of your choice !

Mudakkathaan Dosai Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 5 mins | Cooking Time : 10 mins
Makes : 5 dosa | Suits: 1+ Years babies and whole family

Modakkaruthaan keerai – handful
Idli batter – 1.5 cups
Water – 1/4 cup
Gingelly Oil – to drizzle over dosa

Preparation

1.Clean and wash mudakkathaan keerai. Just the center creeper stalk can be discarded. The leaves attached sprigs can be used.

Add lil water and grind again till it is made a smooth paste.How to make Mudakathan keerai dosai step-23.Add the ground mix to idli batter and mix well. Tips/Tricks

  • After mixing keerai to idli batter, the batter should neither be too watery nor be thick.
  • Once the dosa batter is prepared, consume on the same day.
  • Balloon vine(flower-like portion) can also be added while grinding.
  • If you get a chance to get this keerai in bulk, just clean, wash, sun-dry it for 1 day and once dried completely, powder it in mixie and store in air-tight container. The shelf life is 4 months. Whenever you make dosa, just add a spoon of this powder to the batter and enjoy the benefits!

Mint Tonic

Homemade Mint Tonic - 1With the prayers for faster recovery of Chennai, I dedicate this post to Chennai people. As an after effect of flood, water/food contamination are threatening to cause diarrhoea, vomiting and food poisoning.

As many hospitals are still reforming and many doctors have temporarily relocated out of Chennai, there seems to be long queues seeking medical support.

Please do follow precautionary actions such as

  • Drink boiled water. Refer my earlier article on clean water.
  • Eat hot/warm food
  • Avoid packaged/stored food as they would have been contaminated due to lack of power
  • Wash hands with soap/antiseptic liquid before cooking/eating food
  • Avoid non-veg for few days as you have threats to get flood-killed hens and goats

In spite of this, if you are affected with diarrhoea/vomiting, try this easy mint water at home on the first day. If its not a serious issue, just this tonic would cure your discomfort. This is an one-time tonic and if your symptoms continue in the next day, then you shall rush to your physician.

Homemade Mint Tonic 2My MIL‘s sister Mrs.Shenbagam Muthusamy introduced this to me and this really does magic. From then, I do follow this whenever there is a symptom of loose motion and/or vomiting. This is a pregnancy-safe drink. I have given this to my kid too after 2+ years. I have seen this working 3 out of 4 times ! Anyways, we usually note the frequency on the first day and goto doctor on the second day. So, no harm in trying this harmless herbal water on the first day.

Herbal Mint Tonic Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 3 mins | Cooking Time : 3 mins
Makes : 1/2 Cup | Suits: 2+ Years babies and whole family

Mint Leaves – Handful
Water – 3/4 cup

Preparation

1.Pluck the fresh leaves from stem. Plant the stems in soil to grow your own mint plants. Wash the leaves thrice in water.How to make Mint tonic step-12.In a pan, fry leaves(no oil) for few seconds until they shrink. Tips/Tricks

  • For kids, give just 2 spoons.
  • If kid resists to drink this, you shall add sweetener like honey(after boiling) or palm jaggery(while boiling).
  • Once prepared, drink immediately.
  • Use fresh mint leaves.
