Pineapple Tonic for cough | The best home remedy for cough | Raw Pineapple and honey cures cough

Pineapple is a natural way to cure cough. It really works!! Fresh pineapple juice mixed with honey cuts off cough by kicking off mucus. Try this natural tonic at your next cough!!

My kid Nilaa had sleep-disturbing cough last month. Turmeric Pepper milk kept her cough at bay during the daytime. Honey and pepper made her sleep till midnight. But after that, cough ruled over. Sleepless night. I miss my Karpuravalli Kashayam/Oregano Tonic(Click here for link) that acted as best cough-killer in India. Then my friend(Mrs.Revathi Prabahar) here(in USA),  suggested Pineapple juice. Thanks a ton Rev ji! It worked well and she  we had a sound sleep with no sounds of cough ! I gave this juice for 3 continuous days and the cough was completely off.

Then I googled about the role of pineapple in curing cough. I read that enzyme “bromelain” present in Pine-apple is a natural anti-inflammatory that dissolves the mucus in lungs.

Instead of opting for Pine-apple flavored cough syrup, fresh pineapple juice seems to be the best way to cure cough.If your baby has any food allergy, it is always advisable to wait till 1 year to start with acidic fruits like orange, lemon and pineapple. Else, you shall introduce pineapple around 8-10 months of age.

My Pediatrician advised to avoid “Honey” till she turns 2 as it might cause “Botulism”. So, I have recommended this recipe for 2+years babies.

Eating Pineapple is safe during pregnancy unless it is not an overdose. 1 slice(the whole circle including the core) per day will keep your morning sickness at bay. This fresh pineapple tonic is safe during pregnancy. If you have spotting problems(before or during pregnancy), then consult your doctor before having pineapple.

Raw Pineapple Tonic Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 10 mins
Makes : 3/4 Cup | Suits: 2+ Years babies and whole family

Pineapple – 2 circles
Honey – 1 tsp
Water – 1/4 cup

Preparation

1.Wash pineapple and cut out the top leafy part. Then, cut the outer skin. I usually wash it again 😉2.Cut into circles. Take 2 circles one over the other. Cut horizontally and vertically so that they are chopped into bite-sized pieces.3.Take the pieces in a mixie jar and puree them well without any lumps. Then add 1/4 cup of water.4.Again grind them for several pulses. Then, filter them using a sieve. Press with a spoon to extract all drops.5.Add a tsp of honey and mix well until it is fully dissolved.

Drink immediately. Get well soon !

Tips/Tricks

  • Filtering the juice is optional. You can drink as such, if you prefer.
  • Add some pepper powder or finely crushed pepper on top for faster relief.
  • Mine was so sweet as pineapple was well ripened. You shall increase honey to 1 tbsp for more sweetness.
  • For additional sweetness, you can add panangalkandu(Palm candy) in 1/4 cup water, dissolve it and then filter it to add in pineapple juice instead of plain water while grinding. Palm candy is good for cold and sore throat.

Orange Juice is good for cold | Pulpy Orange juice recipe using palm candy/panang kalkandu

Homemade pulpy Orange juice is indeed a Vitamin C tonic, but much Fresh and Natural ! We have seen ppl avoiding orange during cold. But, orange is actually good for cold, cough, constipation and diarrhea !!

Vitamin C rich in orange strengthens our immune system. It gears up our defense to fight against illness causing viruses and bacteria. That’s why we buy bags of oranges to meet sick persons. Oranges will make them “Get well soon” !!

Vitamin C plays an important role in the absorption of iron by our body. Whenever I give non-veg, I make sure I give tomato rasam or orange juice/ guava/ strawberries to my kid for proper iron-absorption.

Avoid sugar-dumped store-bought orange juices. Homemade pulpy orange juice is good for kids. Pulp is included to retain the fiber in it. Adults can have this when tired or sick. In normal days, try to eat fruits rather than drinking juices as juice shoots up your sugar level at once. Especially, in pregnancy when we need to eat variety of fruits, avoid juices and shakes to stay away from Gestational Diabetes.If your baby has any food allergy, it is always advisable to wait till 1 year to start with citrus fruits like orange and lemon. Else, you shall introduce orange around 8-10 months of age. This particular pulpy orange juice is a mix of pulp and liquid and it might be difficult for babies to consume this, so I have recommended for 2+ years kids. Otherwise, you shall give just bite sized orange pulp(with outer white layer removed) or orange carrot juice(pulsed well in mixie) to babies from 8th month onward.

Pulpy Orange Juice Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 5 mins
Makes : 1 Cup | Suits: 2+ Years babies and whole family

Orange – 1
Water – 1/2 cup
Palm Candy/Panang Kalkandu – 1 tsp

Preparation

1.Wash orange and cut it through the center into two halves.2.Use juicer to extract the juice. Once it becomes soft, you shall squeeze out the juice just using hand. Discard seeds, long/thick fiber, if any.3.Pour the pulp into the juice. In 1/2 cup of water, add a tsp of powdered palm candy.4.Mix well with a spoon until palm candy fully dissolves in water. Filter this sweetened water into juice and mix well.          Sweet and Pulpy orange juice is ready.. Enjoy every sip …

Tips/Tricks

  • Many people skip washing oranges with the intent that we are just going to eat the inner part. But if you don’t wash the outer skin, you might be transmitting the germs from outside to inside.
  • 1 big orange gave me 1/2 cup juice. I added 1/2 cup water to it. Always dilute orange juice with water.
  • I always powder palm candy in mixie and store it in refrigerator.
  • I used 1 tsp Panangalkandu powder. As my orange was sweet, this was sufficient for me. You can increase if needed more.
  • If you want to make orange juice for cold, then do not skip palm candy as panangalkandu too have cold-curing properties.

Ginger Lemon Tea Recipe | Inji Elumichai Chaaru | Homemade Ginger Lemon Tonic for cold

Ginger Lemon Tea with honey sweetener is a homemade tonic to relieve from cold, cough and flu symptoms. Ginger tea is traditionally given to feeding moms to improve lactation. Pregnant ladies prefer this to cope up with the symptoms of morning sickness.

It also lowers heartburn and indigestion. It soothes pain and is recommended for ladies during their menstrual cycles. It relaxes the body and boosts the immune system. This tea is best suited for travel. Take a cup before travel to avoid motion sickness and take a cup after travel to get rid of body pain.

It is always a debate if pregnant ladies can eat ginger or not ?! Experts advice that minimal consumption of fresh ginger is safe during pregnancy and indeed relieves from vomiting and nausea. If you are pregnant, use only half of the ginger used in this recipe to make tea. Drink once in morning whenever morning sickness demands. Remember that ginger lowers blood sugar levels. If you are having GDM(Gestational Diabetes) and if you are taking any medicines or injections to control blood sugar, pls avoid ginger. If you have GDM and are just controlling with food limitations, then you shall opt for this tea with your doctor’s advice.

It was snowing on and off till last week here in USA. I desperately wanted to click something in snow background. It was much freezing outside with -16 degrees. Though I could not try more angles in that biting cold weather, I somehow managed to click 😉

Ginger – 1/2 inch
Lemon juice – 1 tbsp
Honey – 1 tsp
Palm Jaggery(Panang kalkandu) – 1 tsp
Water – 1 cup

Preparation

1.Peel the skin of ginger and cut into small pieces. In a pan, add 1 cup of water and cut ginger pieces.2.Add a teaspoon of palm jaggery and let it boil for 5 mins.3.Switch off the stove and do not disturb it for 5 more mins. After 5 mins, filter to remove ginger pieces and palm jaggery impurities.4.Add just a tbsp of lemon juice. Add a teaspoon of honey and mix well.           Every sip heals your ailments ! Feel Relaxed…

Tips/Tricks

  • Palm jaggery is optional, but do include it if you take this tea for cold. It adds additional sweetness too which is required for this tea.
  • If you are taking this drink for dry cough or morning sickness , do add few leaves of Mint/Pudhina when boiling ginger.
  • Increase honey if you want it to be more sweeter.
  • Do not add more lemon juice as it might be bitter.

Oregano tonic | Karpuravalli Kashaayam | Sambarballi kashayam for cough

Its raining ! Its pouring ! The kiddo is sneezing !! The climate is so wetty wet triggering runny nose. Cough devil doesn’t allow the kid to sleep a wink ?! Here is a suggestion…

Just give this Oregano tonic half an hour before baby goes to bed and do not give water or any other food after this and then witness the magic! This worked well for my kid.. She sleeps peacefully without cough in the night. Hope this will work for your little one too.. Do try and if it works, I will be more happy than you 😉

Give this for  2+ years babies. If your baby is under 2 years, you drink this tonic in the evening and feed your baby in the night so that it is transferred to the baby via your breast milk.

Sambaravalli kashaayam Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 2 mins | Cooking Time : 8 mins
Makes : 1 tbsp | Suits: 2+ Years babies and whole family

Oregano/Karpuravalli leaf – 1
Water – 1/2 cup
Palm Sugar/Panangalkandu – 1/2 tsp

Preparation

1.Wash the leaf well. Cut/tear it into pieces and add to half a cup of water.2.Let it boil for 5 minutes. Then add panangalkandu powder or crystals and let it boil for 2-3 mins.3.Once the water is halved, switch off the flame and filter the tonic. Squeeze out the leaves to extract all drops.
Serve warm…

Tips/Tricks

  • I usually get panangalkandu as such, powder in mixie and store in air-tight container in fridge. This way, the palm sugar stays good for longer time.
  • Add more palm sugar, if you want still more sweeter.
  • Once this tonic is prepared, consume within an hour.

Thuthuvalai Rasam | Thoothuvalai Recipes for cold | Medicinal food for cold

thudhuvalai-rasam-cold-recipe-1Thudhuvalai/Solanum Trilobatum is not only a medicine for cold, cough, asthma and other respiratory disorders but also to stay young and to extend our lifespan, is what Sidhars say!!

This herb is specially recommended for dads-to-be, moms-to-be, pregnant ladies and lactating moms.

Grow these herbs at home and add medicinal values to your food. My MIL makes this rasam whenever someone has cold at home. You can even buy Thuthuvalai powder from herbal shops and make this rasam.

Below is the one from my kitchen garden@Kovai. The green fruits will ripen to red. If you just squeeze some red fruits in a pot, you can own one..thudhuvalai-from-my-kichen-garden

Thuthuvalai Rasam Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 10 mins | Cooking Time : 15 mins
Serves : 3 | Suits: 2+ Years babies and whole family

Thuthuvalai leaves – 10
Tamarind – 1 gooseberry-sized(Nellikkaai alavu)
Salt & water – as required

To grind

Cinnamon(Pattai) – 1/2 inch piece
Cloves(Kraambu) – 2
Peppercorns(milagu) – 1/2 tsp
Cumin seeds(jeeragam) – 1/2 tsp
Small onions – 12
Garlic cloves- 6
Curry leaves – Few
Coriander leaves – Few
Turmeric powder – 1/8 tsp
Coriander powder(Malli thool) – 1 tsp

To Temper

Coconut oil – 1 tbsp
Mustard(Kadugu) – 1/4 tsp
Urad dal(Ulundhu) – 1/4 tsp
Dry Red chilli – 1
Curry leaves – Few

Preparation

1.Cut out 10 leaves and wash well. Soak tamarind in warm water and keep aside.thoodhuvalai-selavu-rasam-recipe-12.Grind cinnamon(pattai), cloves(kraambu), peppercorns(milagu), cumin seeds(jeeragam), small onions, garlic cloves, curry leaves, coriander leaves, turmeric powder and coriander powder. Tips/Tricks

  • Virgin coconut oil is recommended for this recipe. Click here to see how to make virgin coconut oil at home ?
  • Coconut oil can be replaced by gingelly oil(Nallennai)
  • Thoodhuvalai plant will be full of thorns. Handle carefully while cutting the leaves.
  • The green fruit can be added when rasam boils. Do not grind it as it will be so bitter.
  • 4 MusuMusukkai leaves can be added along with thoodhuvalai leaves for good relief from cold.
  • If you don’t like the strong flavor of herbs, you shall fry the leaves in few drops of coconut oil to get rid of raw smell and then grind along with other ingredients.

Coconut Milk tonic | Coconut Milk Kashayam | Thengai Paal Sukku Kashaayam

Thengaaipaal chukku kashaayam for cold-2Ancestral practice of natural homemade medicines are becoming popular now as they don’t have any side-effects and do not react with doctor prescribed medicines.

This coconut tonic is one such medicine for cold and associated chest congestion. After recovering from common cold, sometimes we might encounter continuous cough followed by spitting out sputum. In such scenarios, our grannies suggest to take this kashaayam for 3 nights after food and before going to sleep. No food or water after drinking this. My MIL makes this for Nilaa if her cold and cough persist longer. She believes this will melt out the phlegm accumulated in the chest(Nenju Chali).

Pregnant ladies too can have this tonic. Dry ginger generates heat and so it is advised to avoid it in the first trimester. Taking very small amounts of it to cope up with nausea is still a normal practice. Dry ginger and sesame seeds are not enemies of pregnancy. It is actually a medicine, when had in moderation. Consuming often or/and overdose would cause side-effects.

Coconut Milk Tonic Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 10 mins | Cooking Time : 10 mins
Serves : 2 | Suits: 2+ Years kids and whole family

Coconut – half
Palm Jaggery(Panang Karupatti) – 1/4 cup
Cloves(Krambu) – 2
Dry ginger(Sukku thool) – 1/4 tsp
Cardamom powder(Aelakkai thool) – 1/8 tsp

Preparation

1.Grate karupati and keep ready. Slice out coconut pieces from its shell.Homemade cold remedy with coconut milk step-12.Grind coconut pieces in a mixie. Add water and grind again.Homemade cold remedy with coconut milk step-23.Take a wide mouthed container and tie a thin cotton cloth around its mouth. Pour the ground coconut over the cloth. Untie the cloth and hold all the corners in one hand and squeeze out the coconut milk(Thick or First milk) using the other hand.Homemade cold remedy with coconut milk step-34.After squeezing out the milk, separately gather the coconut mass held up inside the cloth. Repeat this process until all done. Pour some hot water into the gathered mass and let it soak for 5-10 mins.   • If you are using sukku karupati, then reduce the addition of sukku.
  • Do not boil coconut milk too long as it will start expelling coconut oil.
  • This sweetness is correct for me. You shall increase more karupatti, if desired.
  • Once prepared, consume as soon as possible.

In our villages, they still believe this gravy to be a cold and cough treating food and an energy booster! Who could say no to this yummy medicinal treat ??!!

Country Chicken Gravy Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 30 mins | Cooking Time : 30 mins
Serves : 5 | Suits: 2+ Years kids and whole family

Country Chicken – 1 small full chicken(weighs 1+ kg after cleaning)
Small Onions – 2 handsfull
Tomatoes – 2
Curry leaves – Few
Coriander leaves – Few
Cinnamon/Pattai – 1/2 inch stick
Ginger-Garlic paste – 1 tsp
Curry powder/Kuzhambu podi – 1 tbsp **See Notes below**
Turmeric powder – 1/8 tsp
Salt – As required
Water – As required

To Grind:

Coconut – 10 finger-sized pieces
Cinnamon/Pattai – 1 inch stick
Cloves/Krambu – 2
Aniseed/Saunf/Sombu – 1 tsp
Peppercorns/Milagu – 1 tsp
Poppy Seeds/Kasakasa- 1 tsp
Roasted chana dal/Pottu kadalai – 1 tbsp

Preparation

1.Wash chicken and soak it in water mixed with salt and lemon drops for 10 mins. Rinse it again, drain water and keep the chicken ready.

2.Peel Small onions and chop them. Wash and chop tomatoes and coriander leaves too.how-to-make-naatu-kozhi-chicken-kuzhambu-step-13.In a pressure cooker, add oil and once hot add cinnamon stick. Add curry leaves and chopped onion. Once onions become translucent, add ginger-garlic paste.

Tips/Tricks

  • Do not get skinless chicken. Just fire out the feathers(Pongu posukki) and get with skin. Tastes best!
  • Small onions can be replaced by normal ones but small onions taste best for this recipe.
  • Pressure cooking is not required for broiler chicken. But, country chicken takes time to cook and hence recommended.
  • You shall use any curry powder that you use for non-veg recipes. Or just add 1/4tbsp dhaniya powder + 3/4tbsp plain chilli powder+ 1 pinch Jeera powder .
  • Fried chana dal(Pottukadalai) is used just to thicken the gravy. It is optional and you can skip it, if you wish.
  • Add water(less or more) according to the consistency you wish the gravy to be.

Arai Keerai Kadanjadhu | Arai Keerai Masiyal | Spleen Amaranth Mash

Arai Keerai Masiyal for kids-2In childhood, we go crazy for keerai urundai(greens balls) that amma drops in the centre of the palm and we carefully drop into the mouth without breaking the ball and happily chew mouthful 🙂 The taste of araikeerai with sesame oil is divine ! Nilaa eats this as green laddoos.. Happy to pass on the healthy habit !!

It is specially recommended for pregnant ladies as it increases RBC count in the blood and prevents Anemia. Arai keerai is given as a postpartum medicinal food from the third day of delivery. It increases milk secretion. This is one of the best foods recommended by Sidha(rs) to dads-to-be.

Amaranthus Dubius/Spleen Amaranth/Arai Keerai increases immunity and strengthens nervous system. It also cures cold, fever, constipation and gastric troubles.

Just buy a seed packet(Rs.10) from any Agro food shop, sow in 2 to 3 pots with a gap of one week each. Keep harvesting for 3 months!!

Preparation Time : 15 mins | Cooking Time : 5 mins
Makes : 1 Cup | Suits: 1+ Year babies and whole family

Arai keerai – 10 stalks or half bunch
Pearl onions – 10
Garlic – 2
Tomato – 1
Dry red chilli – 1
Cumin Seeds/Jeeragam – 1/4 tsp
Rock salt – 1/4 tsp
Water – 1/4 cup

Preparation

1.Buy arai keerai from organic shop or cut out each stem(leaving the root to grow again) from homegrown greens.How to make arai keerai kadanja masiyal step-12.Discard/Throw away the below shown bud-like flowers and worms-crept leaves. Tips/Tricks

  • You shall avoid pressure cooker and cook in stove-top in a closed vessel.
  • You shall avoid mixie and just mash well using mathu. In such case, add salt in the last minutes of cooking.
  • You shall increase or decrease red chilli according to the required spice level.
  • Add only little water just required for cooking. Do not drain excess water, if any.
  • Do not skip or replace pearl onions as they enhance the taste.

Do grow Oregano plant in your home garden/balcony. It requires less water and sunlight. Just pluck a part of stem(root is not required) with 2-3 leaves and plant in a small pot or shopping cover and thats it.. You own a medicinal herb @ home 🙂

Oregano bajji Recipe – Ingredients

Preparation Time : 3 mins | Cooking Time : 10 mins
Makes : 10 bajjis | Suits: 2+ Years babies and whole family

Oregano Leaves- 10
Gram/Besan flour/Kadala maavu- 1/4 cup
Corn flour/Chozha maavu- 1 tbsp
Raw rice flour/Pacharisi maavu- 1 tbsp
Asafoetida/Perungaayam- 1 pinch
Salt- 1/4 tsp
Chillie Powder- 1/4 tsp
Water- 1/4 cup
Oil- To deep fry

Preparation

1.   Wash the leaves in water and place it in a dry plate.
2.   Take 1/4 cup of besan flour in a mixing bowl.How to make Oregano bajji step-13.   Add corn flour, raw rice flour and a generous pinch of asafoetida.How to make Oregano bajji step-24.   Add required salt and chilli powder.How to make Oregano bajji step-35.   Add water and mix well. The batter should neither be watery nor be too thick.

6.   Pour oil in a kadai and let it be hot enough to deep fry. Take the leaf holding the stalk and dip one side in the batter.
How to make Oregano bajji step-47.   Turn over and dip the other side. Gently wipe the bottom of the leaf against the bowl to get rid of dripping batter. Gently, drop the leaf into hot oil.How to make Oregano bajji step-58.   Deep fry and turn over after some time. When the bubbles and noise are reduced, take out the bajjis using perforated/holed ladle. Tips/Tricks

  • Wash leaves and preferably place it over a kitchen towel so that it do not drip water that might make the batter watery.
  • Please do not add artificial colors.
  • This bajji puffs well without using cooking soda and so avoid it.
  • You can increase chilli powder if you want a spicy version.
  • You shall add some pepper powder too.
