Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

GDM,  an acronym I hated as it imposed a threat on my kiddo’s health and also restricted my intake when I just stepped into my mom’s home at my 8th month with a dream to munch all that I missed for 7 months. Any woman would love to have the toothsome delicacies prepared by mom and garnished with her love .. More than me, my mom was unhappy as I was given a stringent diet chart to stick to ! To make her(& me) happy, I browsed for varieties to graze with GDM . Sharing you some of those selections that made my GDM period better !

Just an eye-opener before peeping thru the menu .. My brother(a Doctor) always used to say that, “If you wanna curse someone, tell that you will soon be diabetic. Thats the height of cruelty”. I didn’t understand the real meaning of his words until I got GDM. But I had a relief as GDM is short-lived and it will vanish just after baby birth. Still, GDM mothers are highly prone to diabetes in future. That compelled me to live a healthy life throughout to keep that devil out ! Not only for GDM moms, any human leading a healthy life with regular exercise and healthy dietary habits could kick out diabetes and any other unsought syndromes..

Food for Pregnant ladies with gestational diabetes:

  • Dried peas, beans and other legumes
  • wholegrains including Millets
  • Wheat Pasta/Bread/Chapathi
  • Potato within limits
  • Brown rice
  • Corn
  • Apples
  • Oranges
  • Pears
  • Carrots
  • Cucumbers
  • Porridges – Oats , Sathu maavu(Multi grains powder), Broken wheat
  • Wheat rava(semolina) upma
  • Use Olive oil/Sunflower oil for cooking
  • Egg
  • Chicken soup
  • Fish
  • Pulses/Legumes (payaru/kottai vagaigal)
  • Lentils (paruppu vagaigal)
  • All kinds of greens (keerai vagaigal)
  • No limitation in veggies except beetroot and sweet pumpkin. Dont avoid fully, but reduce the quantity.

Food to avoid during GDM:

  • Sugar and sugary alternatives like Jaggery, palm sugar
  • Chocolates
  • Pastries
  • Sweets
  • Ice cream
  • Cream biscuits
  • Deep fried fritters
  • Fruit juices(both fresh and packed) – Avoid juices and opt for whole fruits
  • White rice especially in the night
